Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi book review

Shatter Me

by Tahereh Mafi

The first book in the Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi, we follow Juliette as she is thrown into a life of suffering and heartbreak. Shunned by the world and her family, she is subjected to test after test, eventually winding up in a mental hospital. Surviving in a dark cell with no human connection, she hangs onto her sanity by threads. Then, a man from her past winds up in the cell with her, and her life changes forever.

This book was amazingly written, extremely unique, and grasps your attention almost immediately. I got this book recommended a lot, and I was hesitant to read it because it was mostly recommended by booktok, and I find it very hard to trust anything from there. But I am very happy that I did. It was kind of predictable and slow at some points, but it was written well enough that I could look over those things, and it fit well with the story.

THE CHARACTERS

Julliete was written very well. You could emphasize with her character, and she was relatable in a way that anyone could connect with her. The way that the book was written showed her mental health so well, and the way that it gets more fluent the more she grows into herself is very impressive. It is a great example of show don't tell. Her distrust of those around her, her anxiety, and her sadness are depicted very well

Adam is an interesting character, if not a bit boring. I did not understand his emotions at first, but the more we learned about his past and his history with Julliete the more it made sense. I thought the same about Julliete, but it makes sense when you consider how desperate she is to have any type of human connection. He kind of felt like a placeholder, but I am interested to see where his character goes in the future because I think there could be a lot more depth there.

Warner was by far the most interesting character in the book, mostly because he is so hard to figure out.  You don't know his motives or what he actually thinks for the entire book. We know that he has some type of emotional connection to Julliette but no idea what he actually is. Out of all the things I am excited about for the future books, getting to know his character more is one of them.

The side characters were good, even though there were very few of them. The actually important people got introduced later into the book, so we didn't have a lot of time with them. But, I thought they were all unique, and I am excited to see more of them. It's interesting to see how Juliette handles meeting new people, because of her feelings towards herself and her past history of being abused and looked down on by the whole world.

THE PLOT

I thought the plot was well put together and interesting. It was very slow at some points but it ended up fitting well with the story, it's all about just pushing through. I loved how the author handled information. We found pieces about Julliete and Adams' past throughout the book, which made it interesting and kept you guessing. I also liked all of the plot twists that kept you on your toes, even though they were kind of predictable. You can tell that there is a lot more to build on the world, and the ending left it very open to do so. I finished it with more questions than answers, but with this being the first book in the series I would say that this is a good thing.

I would definitely label this book as dystopian rather than fantasy, just because of the post apocalyptic atmosphere. You can really tell how much humans have destroyed the world, impacting food and nature on a mass scale. It is a story about trying to rebuild what they lost, even though no one can seem to figure out a solution.

THE SMUT

This was not a necessarily smutty book, which honestly I think is a good thing. Seeing the mental state of Julliete made me think that anything super slutty would not fit well at all. However, all of the *spicy* scenes were very cute, and it felt very rewarding considering how lonely and touch deprived Julliete had been for almost all of her life. I liked seeing how careful Adam was with her and understanding that it had to go slow the more she became comfortable. I think that for the rest of the series we can definitely expect more smut as the characters grow into themselves.

TO SUM UP

I think the best thing about this book is the way that it was written, both because of its uniqueness and its storytelling abilities. Because of this it was able to put together a world where you could emphasize with the characters while also being immersed in the atmosphere and the dystopian-like world. The plot twists were also attention catching, especially towards the end of the story. All in all I would recommend this book if you are interested in reading a long series. The characters, world, magic system, writing, and dystopian atmosphere are all shaping up to be an awesome story.
