Ignite Me
by Tahereh Mafi
The third installment in the Shatter Me series, Juliette must reconnect and rebuild what the order has lost. Friendships are tested, alliances gained, and the survival of them all is at risk. Juliette must grow and find herself and her powers if she stands a chance of saving those that she loves.
This was probably my favorite book so far in the Shatter Me series, which I have also heard echoed by a lot of others that have read it. Although it does have some flaws, it is very well written in the way of the characters, romance, storyline, and pacing. Aaron and Juliettes relationship is a big part of why I liked this, as well as
getting to see all the ways that Juliette has grown through the series. All her strength definitely cumulated in this book.
THE CHARACTERS
I have to start off talking about Adam because wow, my hatred only grows with him. I so badly wanted to give him some leeway, I know he has been through a lot and he needs to protect James, but he was so much of an ass in this book I couldn't get past it. Him acting like an absolute toddler by not taking refuge with the Order only because Arron was there was insane, especially because he was directly risking James’s safety in the process. He slowed down the whole movement because of his own personal problems and created a straight up hostile atmosphere just because he treated Juliette like crap and she got sick of it. Yes he might have had a bit of a change of heart at the end, but it does not excuse what he put everyone through with his selfishness.

Aaron was amazing in this book, and was probably my favorite part of it. We got to hear so much more about his motivations and what he cares about, but also the immense pain he had to endure to get there. We got to understand why he is so reserved, and how hard it is for him to open himself up the way he has to Julliette. It was great seeing him break through his reservations and help the Order, even trying to become their friend at some points. Seeing him interacting with James was great. Learning more about his mother and what happened to her made his character so much more understandable and likable.
Juliette grows so much over the course of the story, and it was so refreshing to see. The best part about these books has always been showing her go from a scared and fragile girl to a badass who stands up and fights for herself. I will have to admit, seeing her so whiny, especially in the last book Unravel Me, I was starting to lose hope in her being that likable of a character. However it all pulled together in this book and seeing her at the end, using her powers to their full extent and feeling great about it was so satisfying. Seeing her finally accept the Order members as friends and calling them so cemented her growth for me.
The side characters were great, and I was happy to see that we got to learn more about all of them individually. Kenji makes the story for me every time. The writing around him is perfect and he felt like a true friend to Julliette. He jokes around and behaves like an actual person, not someone out of a book, and it is refreshing to see. This sounds messed up but I was kind of glad that the Order got thinned out, just so we could get to know these characters better. Seeing how they all react to Arron is also very funny, especially Kenji.
ROMANCE
Julliete and Aaron's relationship has always been unique in a way that no others could understand. They have lived very different lives, but the way that you can see how similar they are despite that is cool to see. Seeing Julliete finally accept her feelings towards Arron and admit them outloud was such a great moment, and had me giggling and kicking my feet the whole time. I wished we could have seen more of the *sexy stuff* happening instead of the whole “fade to black” thing but I understand that this is not that kind of book haha. Have to keep it up to the imagination at the end of the day.
STORYLINE
The storyline in this book was one of the reasons why it's one of my favorites. The tension is there throughout the entire book, and keeps you on edge about what is going to happen next. We see everyone come together in order to do what seems impossible, and save their home and those they care about. They end up in the most unlikely of circumstances, relying on the establishment's headquarters itself in order to regroup and train for what is to come. We follow them as they grow closer and refine their powers together. The book ends in a huge climax, where they must fight to reclaim sector 45 once and for all.
I think my biggest complaint from this book comes at the end, with the final confrontation with Anderson. Throughout the story, we hear about Andersons “big weapon,” the thing that can bring the Order to its knees and take down everyone. I was really excited for this, and anticipated a big battle that would test Juliettes powers and skills. However, I was very disappointed with what it actually turned out to be. Instead, we get a man who can control sound waves, a very powerful ability that immediately knocks Juliette and Kenji down. Now this does sound cool and like it will lead to a cool fight, but Juliette kills him in less than a chapter. It was very underwhelming and disappointing, and I feel like it didn't do justice to everything the book had built up to be.
TO SUM UP
I really liked this book, it had great characters, romance, plotline, and story description that always made me want to keep reading more. Other than the ending, it was a great book all around, and the best in the series so far. I cannot wait to see where this story goes, and how Juliette and the rest of the Order will confront the rest of the reestablishment around the world. This book has an ending that feels like it could be rapping up the series as a whole, however I know that there is much in store for all of them going forward.
